Lock 4 Waterloo on a misty morning

It’s a short paddle from the launch site on Oak Island to Lock 4. Lock 4 drops boats 14.5 feet to the lower canal level OR enter at the Waterloo Department of Public Works at 45 Water Street, if you prefer to bypass the lock.

The canal is lined with houses, a factory and the ruins of an old distillery. As you paddle leisurely down the canal there will be live music, snacks with a fun and challenging scavenger hunt and a few games. Prizes will be awarded to the paddlers who have the most correct entries.

The canal parallels much of route 5&20 as you head east. After the second bridge a commercial section leads into Seneca Falls and a residential area. Along the way you will pass the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce with docking space. After passing ITT Goulds Pumps the old tow path/rail bed comes into view on the right.

As you enter Seneca Falls, on the right, is the Frank J. Ludovico Sculpture Trail. It will eventually be part of the Erie Canalway Trail that reaches across New York State. This trail is special in that it’s a sculpture garden as well as a trail. The first sculpture that was installed along the trail is called, “The Status of Women” and commemorates six important points in women’s history. You’ll also find statues of Amelia Bloomer and Mary Baker Eddy, two prominent women in women’s suffrage.

On your left is the Seneca Falls Community Center boat ramp to reach terra firma. Secure your kayak/canoe and join us for food and more live music. Awards for the top pledges earners will be presented as well as a silent auction of some very unique items. Food will be provided to all participants at no additional charge. Shuttles will return to transportation in Waterloo.

Approved Watercraft – Canoes, Single Kayaks & Tandem Kayaks. Life jackets required. Waivers also required. If not on file, waivers will be available at check-in.
