5K Race Benefits House of Concern

Race For Hunger 5k August 2nd at Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve.

The Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve is hosting their fourth, annual 5K Race for Hunger on August 2, 2014 at 9:00 am at their Black Brook Road site in Seneca Falls. Although this race’s USTAF certified course is situated in a wetland preserve, it is not your typical “trail race.”

The terrain is relatively flat, with a stone dust path and beautiful native wildflowers, wildlife and ponds surrounding the course. In addition, the trail is built up for race day, so even if the weather has been rainy, the course will be relatively dry.

Proceeds from the 5K Race for Hunger benefit the House of Concern, a very active, local food pantry that services hundreds of families in need.

Every year, this race brings runners from around the state and across the country. The event is sponsored by the Seneca Meadows Landfill. Volunteers from the Seneca Falls Volunteer Fire Department, the Seneca County House of Concern, United Way of Seneca County and North Seneca Ambulance are sure to make the day a success.

“We have some great prizes for this year’s event,” said Seneca Meadows Public Relations Coordinator, Marcy Neumire. “First, second and third place overall male and female winners will all receive cash prizes, which is pretty much unheard of for a $15 entry fee. I think our runners are going to be very happy.”

The House of Concern, a non-profit agency that has been in operation since 1969, services low income families and individuals in Seneca County by providing food, personal items, clothing, furniture, household goods and financial aid. Community fundraisers, such as the 5K Race for Hunger are essential for the successful operation of this charitable organization.

Other food banks providing services for Seneca County, include: The Cayuga Seneca Community Action Agency and the Harmony Food Pantry in Waterloo, the Ovid Federated Church, the Interlaken Reformed Church, and the Tyre Reformed Church.

The Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve is located on the corner of Black Brook Road and King Road in Seneca Falls, one mile south of State Route 318. For more information, call 315-539-5624.
